Last Sunday, Haverfordwest County AFC Women made their return to Bridge Meadow, looking to get another win after last week’s performance.
Haverfordwest took kick-off and started very strongly in the opening five minutes. They were rewarded in the 7th minute, when a long pass from Bethan Chapman into space sent Jasmine Bramhall-Thomas one-on-one with the keeper on the edge of the box. Bramhall-Thomas got to it first and put it past the keeper to make it 1-0. Haverfordwest kept up the pressure, and in the 14th minute Ffion Kirk kept the ball in play, stopping it going out for a corner, before passing to Freya Marshall, who hit the side netting.
In the 17th minute, Trefelin intercepted a pass on the edge of Haverfordwest’s box, but Erin Frost quickly stopped the attack with a block. From the resulting corner, Trefelin made it 1-1. The ball was sent to the back post, where their number 14 tapped it in. Trefelin looked to be on the front foot after their goal and nearly scored again when their number 8 was found on the edge of the box and hit a well-timed volley, but goalkeeper Jessica Rees put it over the bar. After a strong 15-minute push, Trefelin finally made it 2-1 in the 33rd minute, when their number 6 dribbled in from the wing to the edge of the box and hit it into the top right corner.
Haverfordwest won a penalty in the 36th minute after a Trefelin defender took Ffion Kirk out as she got into the box following a very good run from the left wing. Lily Owen stepped up and hit it into the bottom left corner to make it 2-2. Now on the front foot, Haverfordwest played some great football, and in the 40th minute another long ball from Bethan Chapman helped them go 3-2 up. The goalkeeper attempted to clear the ball but missed, allowing Laura Davies to get past her and score.
Just before the break, Haverfordwest made it 4-2. Freya Marshall played a long pass, which the defenders tried to clear on the halfway line, but Laura Davies’ press was too strong. She won the ball back, ran into the box and put it past the keeper.
Going into the break, the score was 4-2 to Haverfordwest, after three goals in the last 15 minutes had put them in the lead having been 2-1 down. Both teams had a few good spells in the first half, but Haverfordwest deserved the lead.
The second half kicked off, and Haverfordwest kept up the pace of the first half to make it 5-2. After some good wing play, Jasmine Bramhall-Thomas got down the wing and played the ball to the top right of the box, into the path of Bethan Chapman, who struck it brilliantly, curling it off the crossbar and in. In the 53rd minute, Laura Davies picked up a booking for giving away a foul on the halfway line.
Shortly after, in the 55th minute, Trefelin made it 5-3 when their number 7 blasted a low, driven shot from the right-hand side of the box into the bottom left corner. Haverfordwest fought back instantly. In the 58th minute, Laura Davies completed her hat-trick after being found by a well-hit pass from Lily Owen, which beat the defenders and gave Davies a one-on-one opportunity to make it 6-3. After going three goals down, Trefelin looked to spark a comeback, and in the 71st minute their number 14 was found again from a corner and scored, getting her brace and making it 6-4. Now fired up, Trefelin nearly made it a one-goal deficit, but a vital slide tackle from Erin Frost stopped the chance and put it out for a corner. But from that very corner, Trefelin did make it 6-5 when their number 3 scored.
Trefelin almost levelled in the 79th minute. After a Haverfordwest player tried to chest the ball away, it fell to Trefelin’s number 11, who put a little too much on it and lifted it over the bar from close range. It was heartbreak for Haverfordwest when Trefelin finally broke their defence in the 85th minute. Their number 10 turned her defender on the edge of the box and took the shot to make it 6-6.
The full-time whistle went as Trefelin beat the odds and completed a three-goal comeback to earn a point from a game that had looked lost when they trailed 6-3 in a very competitive Tier 3 game. Haverfordwest County AFC Women are on the road this Sunday, when they play Ammanford Women AFC, who are third in the league.
