It’s been another busy month for Pembrokeshire Chess Club, who meet at Kensington Court in Steynton every Tuesday night.
The club has welcomed several new faces recently, including adults and juniors alike. A warm welcome goes to Leon and Luke Lorch, Owen Alcock, and the club’s youngest member, Evan Badham.
Junior County Chess
The Dyfed County Junior sides have been in action, playing two 12-a-side matches recently. They narrowly beat West Wales before coming up against a very strong East Glamorgan side. Despite being heavily outgraded, all players put in commendable performances, with Dylan Bambrick of Saundersfoot/Tenby picking up a well-earned draw.
It was pleasing to see the club well represented by Harry, Osian, Suki, Leon, Jozef and Gabriel, who all enjoyed the experience.
Tournaments and Competitions
Jozef and Scott took part in a rapid festival at Pembroke Castle, organised by Haverfordwest Chess Club. Coach Scott also entered the Welsh Seniors, while Martin played in the Weymouth Major.
The Dyfed All Play All Under 1500 and friendly rated games kicked off at Pembrokeshire College on 26th October, with nine club members taking part. Results and a short report can be found at dca-black-eta.vercel.app/league.
Friendly Match vs Narberth
The club also played Narberth in a return-leg friendly over six boards. A mix of three adults and three juniors represented each side, and thanks go to Narberth for making the trip to HQ. The winner on the night? Chess itself.
Member Spotlight
Each month, the club highlights two of its members – believed to be a first for the county and possibly Wales.
Owain Hooper
Owain is 13 years old and has been part of Pembrokeshire Chess Club for 10 months. He’s enjoying learning new strategies, and his favourite opening is the Italian Game. It was great to see him step up and play in the recent DAPA Under 1500 competition.
Away from the board, Owain is a keen Scout and hopes to become a young leader shortly. He also loves football, Marvel and wrestling, and dreams of travelling the world and seeing Wales play football live.
Harry Harling
Harry has been with the club for three and a half years. He loves the game, takes his time in matches, and has developed into a very accomplished player. He competes in various tournaments both locally and further afield, and is a member of the recently established Pembrokeshire Academy, where he takes on board advice during training sessions.
Outside of chess, Harry enjoys gaming and the occasional game of golf.
Dates for the Diary
Pembrokeshire Chess Club is a family-friendly club catering for all abilities, whether that’s friendly matches on club nights or league and competition chess. There’s also a dedicated training session each week.
