Monkton Swifts took a decisive step towards a second place finish, with a 2-1 home win over reigning champions Goodwick United.

With just three points separating the two sides before the match, many would have been watching this fixture with keen interest. Although the league now looks a formality for Hakin, the race for second place has been filled with intrigue all season, with the hosts recently showing their qualities to become the frontrunners for the position.

Not only that, but the quest for silverware may also see these two sides meet in the Senior Cup final. With Monkton seeing off league leaders Hakin United, they now face Neyland in the semi-finals of the competition, whereas Goodwick United face 4th place St Ishmaels as they look to seal their spot in the Ogi Bridge Meadow final.

It was the home side who started the game the stronger, star striker Dylan Davies putting his side ahead in the 22nd minute thanks to an assist from Liam Butland.

Things went from bad to worse for the visitors who went into the break a man down, substitute Tyler Booker seeing red for a strong challenge.

The Swifts doubled their lead just two minutes into the second period through Paul Miller, with Liam Butland once again the provider with his eighth assist of the season in Pembrokeshire's top flight.

Not going down without a fight, the Phoenix Boys fought back with striker Rhys Dalling halving the deficit in the 71st minute as his team battled for a comeback.

It wasn't to be, with the Monkton defence standing strong to secure the three points, but more importantly take a decisive step towards a second place finish.

With both teams eyeing the Senior Cup, there could be even more drama soon to come between these two footballing rivals.
