A Pembrokeshire-based food pop-up is serving up some of the county's finest American-style barbecue, with husband and wife team Craig and Kate Reeves at the helm of their growing venture, Reeves BBQ.
Craig, who honed his culinary skills working as a chef in Pembrokeshire and then during his time in the army, discovered that barbecuing offered something more than just good food. "It's therapeutic," he explains, a passion that came into sharper focus during lockdown when the unique elements of barbecue cookery helped him regain his love for the craft.
After linking up with Owen and Michelle at the Pembrokeshire Chilli Farm, the couple began doing pop-ups and haven't looked back. They launched their social media presence in 2023, and the response has been building ever since.
This past summer proved particularly successful, with appearances at Tenby Brewing Co and Narberth Food Festival showcasing their unique approach to barbecue. "We enjoy collaborating with other businesses," says Kate, a philosophy that's helped them build a strong presence across the county.
What sets Reeves BBQ apart is their commitment to the long game. Their menu features slow-cooked meats with a minimum cook time of 12 to 14 hours, paired with American-style sides rather than traditional Pembrokeshire vegetables. Despite the transatlantic influence, they remain committed to local sourcing, with meat supplied by Pendergrast Butchers.
The couple have just enjoyed a successful weekend pop-up at Steynton Farm Pumpkin Patch where they offered a varied menu that caters to children alongside their signature dishes. They've become known as "the home of pushed pork," their own take on the barbecue classic.
Looking ahead, Reeves BBQ has a busy autumn and winter schedule. By popular demand, they'll be back at Steynton Farm Pumpkin Patch this week on Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th October, followed by their regular pop-up at the Welfare Hall in Merlins Bridge on 1st November, an event they're hoping to make a monthly fixture on the first Saturday of each month. Bonfire Night (5th November) will see them at Llys y Fran for the YFC fireworks, with another Merlins Bridge date set for 6th December.
The couple are also planning a festive menu for the Christmas period, smoked turkey and playful festive creations that we can’t wait to discover. With plans to develop their fast growing enterprise, the Reeves are clearly ambitious about where they can take the business.
Reeves BBQ are also hoping to expand into more video content on social media, having originally envisioned this digital approach when they first started the venture. The strategy appears to be paying off, with influencers and reviewers from as far afield as Australia taking notice of what they're cooking up in Pembrokeshire.
For those wanting to sample authentic, slow-cooked American barbecue without leaving Wales, Reeves BBQ can be found at their various pop-up locations throughout Pembrokeshire.
Up to date details of upcoming events are available through their social media channels.
