The Pembroke County Cricket League got underway on Sunday (Apr 27), the stand out result saw defending James Morris Memorial Division 1 holders Neyland defeated at Cresselly by 57 runs, the hosts posting 195-9 from their 45 overs and the 'all whites' tumbled out for 138 in reply having elected to field when skipper Sean Hannon won the toss overseen by umpire Jonathan Willington.
Youngsters Morgan Lewis struck 25 (5x4) and Charlie Arthur 20 (1x6, 3x4) to set the game at 53-1 which became 60-4 with the introduction of veteran spinner Andrew Miller (3-24), Simon Cole policing the proceedings for the Doves but he fell for 20 (2x4) on 91-6, which left vice captain Dan James to take the game to Neyland, remaining unbeaten on 74 when the allotted 45 overs had been bowled.
The all rounder thumped nine maximums and two fours in his 44 ball innings which turned out to be crucial for his side, skipper Tom Arthur (9; 1x6) helping him add 63 for the ninth wicket having come to the crease on 132-8. Seamer Jack John took 2-26 from his nine overs, as Hannon (1-49), Tom Pritchard (1-39), Dai Davies (1-33) and Wales Over 50s international Alan Webster (1-10) were used to stem the onslaught from James.
James then took the new cherry to ensure his side were able to negotiate the response as he conceded just eight runs from his spell of six overs, assisted by Charlie Arthur whose underlying credentials as a key all rounder in the league saw him return 3-23, including the winning wicket as he dismissed Korey Arran with ten balls of the innings remaining for maximum points. His skipper was also influential taking 4-23 and veteran spinner Christian Phillps 2-24, wicket keeper Paul Murray (21; 1x6;2x4) and Miller (24; 2x4) took the score to 100-6, the difference being the visitors not having an impact player like James to negotiate them to victory.
Haverfordwest (240-9) secured a handsome 142 run victory on the Racecourse over Llangwm (98ao) to also secure maximum points, the prolific run gatherer from the Towns bi-centenary season in 2024 Mikey Jones set his season out early with 86 (5x4) as the opening batsman anchored the innings, adding 70 for the second wicket with Ben Field (47; 1x6; 5x4) and the same partnership with Jame Merry (31; 1x4) for the third wicket to set the game at 161-2. Opening bowler Noah Davies (3-32) returned to remove Jones on 218-6 in his second spell, supported by his skipper Steve Mills (3-48) alongside a lazarus like performance once again from Ollie Davies (2-32).
The 'three salmons' response was in disarray after tea as Davies and the Harrison Allen winning captain Mathew Kiff ducked out with the score on 24-3, Mills struck a boundaryless 21 alongside a patient 31(1x4) from wicketkeeper David Lewis the only scores in double digits. Merry (3-21) and veteran opening bowler, spinner Clive Tucker (2-22) were supported by debutant Rhys Sewell, the former Pontyberem, Llandysul and Aberystwyth University seamer delivering 5-28 to prove his worth to skipper Chris Phillips who would have been delighted with the result having been invited to bat at the toss, overseen by umpire Nigel Richards.
Saundersfoot had John Mansbridge 77 (1x6; 5x4) and Simon Stanford 47 (1x6; 7x4), alongside some indifferent catching from Herbrandston at Little Castle Grove to post 207-8 having been invited to bat by skipper Robbie Hood who took a brace of wickets as did fellow bowlers, Dean John, Harry Nicholas and teenager Morgan Britton. The Seasiders secured a resounding 108 run success as the village side from just outside Milford had only two players in double figures, Hood (19; 2x4) and the returning Nathan Banner (14; 2x4), being dismissed for 99 with a third of their allotted 45 overs remaining. Jon Mansbridge with 5-32 blew away the resistance alongside his younger brother Tom (4-27), wily veteran Neil Powling taking 1-5, the venerable host club Chairman Dai Malloy the unbeaten batsman having struck a boundary for his 4 runs. The game was umpired by Rob Bellerby and Ian Gow.
Whitland equalled the highest score of the day in the division with 240ao at Oatfield Park against last season's division 2 champions Burton who were then dismissed for 112 to give the visiting Borders skipper Johnny Thomas side a maximum point victory. Geraint Jones set the tempo early with and explosive 79 (5x6; 7x4) alongside a more controlled 57 from Thomas (6x4) as the pair added 107 for the third wicket. Gopal Ramasamy struck six maximums and a brace of boundaries in his 63, falling at 221-8, Luke Hayman, fellow new ball bowler Jack Davies and Jack Bevan all taking two wickets.
Wayne Howells was the sixth bowler used by Thomas (2-17) and the veteran's mixture of swing and seam saw him pilfer 5-10 from his five overs in front of umpires Chris Stapleton and Michael Borland, Jones (2-16) leaving the home response in dire straits at 32-2. At the top of the order Dan Llewellyn (15; 2x4), Jonathan Venables (19; 3x4) and Luke Hayman (20; 2x4) assisted top scorer Joe Kiff (30; 1x6; 1x4) to 99-3 before the elegant left hander was out, Thomas and Howells removing the lower order with ease to record a 128 run victory.
Close rivals Carew recorded 169ao at their Gerald Hicks Memorial Ground having been invited to bat by Lawrenny skipper Ryan Morton, but it was enough as the visiting Gavenyards were dismissed for 112. Brian Hall (56), Rhys Davies (40) and James Hinchcliffe (27) were the main run gatherers for the Rooks, Morton (2-25), Rob Williams (4-12) and Harry Thomas (3-35) the key wicket takers for Lawrenny, teenager Oscar Lewis with 25 the only batman to show any form in front of fine bowling from Shaun Whitfield (4-27), Joel Read (2-20) and 2-9 from the venerable slow spin of Barry Evans, fellow football referee Neill Crawshaw witnessing the performance as umpire alongside colleague Tony Pasternak.
